What Are Sailing Fairleads?

Fairleads are among the most fundamental yet often overlooked pieces of hardware on a sailboat. Fairleads are fittings designed to guide a line and control its angle or direction, providing a fixed point for sheets, halyards, and control lines to pass through or around. By doing so, they minimize friction, keep lines from rubbing against other parts of the boat, and ensure smooth handling and quick adjustments — whether you're racing upwind or settling in for a long offshore passage.

In practical terms, a fairlead acts as a turning point for running rigging — rope, chain, or wire — guiding that line so the "lead" is "fair," meaning low friction and low chafe.
