What Are Dock Lines and Why Do They Matter?
A dock line is one of the most fundamental pieces of safety equipment on any boat. These are the lines that connect your vessel to a dock, cleat, or piling — keeping it secure against tides, wind, wakes, and current. Choosing the right dock line isn't just a matter of preference; it directly affects the safety of your boat, your dock, and anyone aboard. A line that's too thin can snap under load; one that's too stiff can transfer dangerous shock forces directly to your cleats, hull fittings, and deck hardware.
Types of Dock Lines
Dock lines come in several construction types, each suited to different applications:
- Three-Strand Nylon: The traditional choice for permanent mooring. Three-strand lines offer excellent stretch, which naturally absorbs shock loads, and they are easy to splice. They tend to be the most affordable option and are a workhorse for everyday docking.
- Double-Braid (Braid-on-Braid): A braided core inside a braided cover, double-braid lines offer great strength and a soft, easy-to-handle feel. They're popular for long-term dock lines where appearance and handling comfort matter.
- Single-Braid: Lightweight and flexible, single-braid lines are often used on sailboats and in applications where the line needs to run cleanly through blocks or fairleads.
- Bungee/Stretch Dock Lines: These incorporate elastic cord to absorb shock and reduce jerking at the cleat. They are especially popular for short-term or day-use docking, fuel stops, and situations where a tight, forgiving connection is preferred.
Key Factors When Choosing Dock Lines
Selecting the right dock line means considering your boat's size and weight, typical weather conditions at your marina, tidal range, and how long the line needs to be. As a general rule, dock lines should be sized at roughly 1 foot of line length for every 2 feet of boat length for bow and stern lines, with spring lines running longer. Line diameter should be matched to your boat's size — heavier vessels need thicker lines with greater breaking strength. Material matters too: nylon is the gold standard for its elasticity and UV resistance, while polypropylene floats but degrades faster in sunlight.
Don't overlook line accessories. Chafe guards protect lines at points of contact, and line snubbers can be added to existing dock lines to absorb shock loads and reduce wear on cleats and hull fittings.
Top Dock Line Brands
Davis Instruments is well known in the marine world for innovative docking and mooring accessories. Their Shockles product line — including the DockShockle, LineSnubber, and LineGrabber — complements dock line setups by providing patented shock-absorbing technology. Davis Instruments' Shockles are engineered to absorb sudden and constant shock loads on mooring lines, reducing wear on lines, cleats, and ground tackle while making life at the dock noticeably more comfortable.
Greenfield Products has been a fixture in the docking category since 1959, and is widely credited as the originator of the bungee dock line for boating. Their iconic Dock Buddy — a stretch dock line that connects boat cleat to dock cleat without knots — set the standard for quick, temporary docking. Greenfield's later innovation, the Stretch N' Slide, brought a multi-loop bungee design that fits virtually any cleat-to-cleat span, making it one of the most versatile dock lines on the market.
