Dorsett Carpet: Marine and Automotive Flooring Since 1961
Dorsett Carpet is the name boat builders, upholsterers and restoration enthusiasts associate with purpose-built marine and automotive carpet. The company behind it, Dorsett Industries of Dalton, Georgia, was founded in 1961 and describes itself as the oldest manufacturer of marine carpet in the United States. Its Dorsett Carpet range covers tufted carpet and woven vinyl flooring designed for the places where ordinary household carpet fails: wet decks, bilge-adjacent cockpits, trunks and cargo areas.
A Heritage in Marine and Automotive Carpet
Dorsett supplies both original equipment manufacturers and the replacement market. On the automotive side, its carpet is used for load floors, mats, trunk areas, seat backs, console panels and quarter trim, and the lineup includes long-running classics such as the El Dorado 800 series and the Corvette 500 series. The company is also ISO 9001:2015 certified and has been employee-owned since 2016.
Marine Carpet Styles
Marine carpet has to cope with sun, moisture, fuel and constant foot traffic. Dorsett's marine lines are built around those demands:
- Mystic (Style 6200): a Cut 'N Loop construction intended to hold its surface appearance longer than conventional marine carpet.
- Bayshore and Aqua Turf (Style 6400): a cut pile olefin carpet that is UV stabilized, mildew and moisture resistant, and water, gas and oil resistant. It is designed for direct glue-down installation rather than snap-in use.
- Classic (Style 5200): a thick, dense polypropylene pile for a more luxurious look and feel.
- Berber (Style 5500): an outdoor-oriented Berber construction offered in 6- and 12-foot widths.
- Woven vinyl (Top Side, Hydro Weave, Hydro Mat): a newer line of woven vinyl flooring for outdoor use, with UV-stable, phthalate-free, mold- and mildew-resistant options.
Bunk Carpet for Boat Trailers
Dorsett also makes marine bunk carpet in UV-stabilized polypropylene, designed to resist oil, gas, water and mildew. It is a common choice for covering trailer bunks so hulls are protected during launching and loading.
What to Consider When Choosing Carpet and Flooring
- Pile type: cut pile gives a plush look, while loop and Berber constructions tend to resist snagging and wear.
- Backing: water-resistant latex or urethane backings help prevent moisture from wicking through.
- Installation method: some styles are made for direct glue-down only, so confirm the method before ordering.
- Width and length: measure the full deck, cabin or cargo area and plan for pattern matching and trimming waste.
- Color: coordinated shades such as Sand, Smoke, Sandstone and Teal make it easy to match vinyl and upholstery.
Whether you are re-carpeting a runabout, refreshing an RV interior or restoring a classic vehicle, Dorsett Carpet offers a long-established, application-specific option for flooring that has to last.
