Balmar offers a wide range of alternator power upgrades designed specifically for marine industry applications. For over 40 years, Balmar has established itself as a leader in marine electrical systems, and their alternators exemplify the engineering excellence and reliability that marine enthusiasts and professionals demand. When it comes to marine charging solutions, Balmar stands apart from conventional automotive-style alternators through purpose-built design features that address the unique challenges of the marine environment.
Engineering Excellence for Marine Applications
Balmar installs high reliability bearings, robust rectifier diodes and improved heat-sinking capabilities on all our alternators to ensure improved system reliability combined with increased charging power. These construction enhancements enable Balmar alternators to deliver sustained high-output performance even under the demanding conditions found aboard vessels—where heat, vibration, moisture, and continuous duty cycles would overwhelm standard alternators.
Comprehensive Product Lines
Balmar's alternator lineup is strategically organized into small-case and large-case families to address different vessel types and power requirements. Small Case (6-Series and XT-Series) Alternators are generally used for light duty, recreational applications such as sailboats and recreational powerboats utilizing either gas and diesel engines. Balmar 6-Series Alternators deliver high-output performance in a compact, small-case package and is available in all four common mounting configurations. The 6-Series ranges from 70A to 120A output, while Balmar's XT-Series line of recreational alternators and charging packages, ranging from 170A – 250A.
For commercial vessels and larger recreational craft, Large Case ( 96-Series, 97-Series and) Alternators are designed for mid-range and heavy duty cycle applications where large diesel engines (>300HP) are predominantly utilized. This comprehensive range ensures that whether you're powering auxiliary systems on a sailboat or managing extensive house battery banks on a liveaboard trawler, there's a Balmar solution engineered for your specific needs.
Patented Smart Ready® Technology
What truly distinguishes Balmar alternators is their integration with advanced voltage regulation systems. Balmar recommends that all its alternators be paired with Balmar's patented Multi-Stage Regulators to optimize charging system efficiency and performance. This sophisticated regulation approach delivers faster, more complete battery charging while extending battery bank life—critical advantages for cruisers who depend on their electrical systems far from shore power. The XT-Series alternators feature patented Smart Ready® technology that enables seamless integration with external multi-stage regulators or internal regulation modes, providing exceptional flexibility for different installation scenarios.
Balmar alternators represent a significant upgrade path for vessel owners seeking to replace factory automotive-type units with purpose-engineered marine charging systems that deliver more amps at low RPM, superior thermal management, and the reliability required for serious marine use.
