Seastar Solutions Hydraulic Steering for Every Drive Type
Few names in marine steering carry as much history as Seastar Solutions. The company grew out of the former Teleflex Marine business and became a leading name in marine steering, control cables, and hydraulic steering systems. It was later acquired by the Dometic Group, and the legacy SeaStar and BayStar product lines continue under Dometic Marine. This page focuses on the brand's hydraulic steering lineup. For the wider range, visit the full Seastar Solutions brand page, or browse the broader Hydraulic Steering category to compare other manufacturers.
Why Hydraulic Steering Matters
Hydraulic steering replaces mechanical cables with fluid-filled lines connecting a helm pump to a cylinder at the engine or drive. The result is smooth, low-effort control with far less torque feedback at the wheel. That advantage grows with heavier outboards, higher horsepower and more aggressive propellers. SeaStar designs its power-assisted systems for this reason, so that you can drive your boat as easily as you drive a car.
SeaStar, BayStar and SeaStar Pro Systems
Seastar Solutions organizes its hydraulic steering into several families, each matched to a type of boat:
- BayStar: a compact hydraulic system for single outboards up to around 150 HP, typically supplied as a helm and cylinder kit with pre-assembled hoses.
- SeaStar Classic/Standard: covers single or twin outboards, inboards, and stern drives, with front-mount, side-mount and inboard cylinders, helm pumps and hose kits.
- SeaStar Pro: aimed at performance bass and bay boats. The Pro front-mount outboard cylinders feature keyed support brackets to prevent racking of the cylinder for a more solid feel, and are suited to high speed, single powered outboard boats capable of speeds above 65 mph.
- Power Assist: 12/24 volt units such as the PA1200-3 add hydraulic assistance for heavy, high-horsepower setups.
The range also reaches into specialty applications, including Tournament Series cylinders, catamaran outboard cylinders, splashwell-mount designs and inboard and sterndrive cylinders in a variety of sizes.
Helms, Cylinders, Hoses and Service Parts
A complete hydraulic system is more than a pump and a ram. The Seastar Solutions catalog includes tilt and non-tilt helms in multiple displacements, outboard hose kits in common lengths, Kevlar-reinforced Pro hoses, bulkhead hose kits, tie bars and mounting hardware. Replacement seal kits for cylinders and purge and fill tools are also available, which makes it practical to service a system rather than replace it.
SeaStar also publishes selection guidance noting that its systems are engineered and validated with its own proprietary SeaStar hydraulic steering fluid, so using the matching oil is the recommended way to keep performance consistent over time.
Choosing the Right Seastar Solutions Setup
- Match the system family to your engine type, horsepower and top speed.
- Confirm the helm displacement and cylinder size suit the boat and number of engines.
- Check mounting style: front mount, side mount, splashwell, inboard or sterndrive.
- Plan hose length for the routing between helm and engine, and consider power assist for large outboards.
With a deep selection of kits and individual components, Seastar Solutions hydraulic steering suits everything from a small tiller-replacement project to a high-speed tournament rig.
